EMDR Therapy in Grimsby, Ontario
A gentler approach to EMDR, using Flash technique and IFS Parts Work so your nervous system can heal without being pushed back through what it's been carrying.

DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR?
You've Done the Talking. The Trigger Didn't Get the Message.
You know the patterns. You can trace them back to their source. You have sat in rooms, found the right words, made the connections. You are not someone who has avoided looking at themselves.
And still. The body reacts before the mind can catch it. The trigger fires and the response runs underneath everything you know. You are smart enough to watch it happen and still cannot stop it.
That is not a failure of effort. It is a structural problem. The memory is stored in a way that keeps the nervous system on alert, and no amount of understanding changes how it is stored. Talk therapy reaches what language can hold. EMDR works in the part that language does not reach.
HOW EMDR WORKS
What EMDR Does That Talking Can't
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. The name is clinical. What it does is simpler to describe.
When something distressing happens and the brain does not get a chance to fully process it, the experience gets stored in a way that keeps it feeling present. That is why a trigger can make the body respond as if the event is happening right now. The brain is holding something it never got to finish.
EMDR gives it the chance to finish. Not by re-living what happened. By giving the brain one more opportunity to process what got stuck.
It is one of the most researched approaches in trauma therapy. A concern we hear often: "I have heard it can be really intense." That is why I am also trained in Flash technique, a protocol that achieves the same reprocessing without requiring you to hold the painful material directly in mind. Not all EMDR is the same. The way I practise it is gentler than most people expect. You do not have to go back through it to move forward from it.

THE TEAM IN YOUR CORNER
Our Approach to EMDR Is Gentler Than Most
Jacqueline Boyer, MSW, RSW | Licence #835942
I founded Grimsby Counselling Centre after 26 years working in mental health. EMDR has been at the centre of my practice for a long time, and what I have learned is that the way it is delivered matters as much as the method itself.
What makes our approach different is that alongside standard EMDR, I am trained in Flash technique and IFS Parts Work. Flash removes the need to focus directly on the hardest material. Parts Work ensures every part of you feels ready before we move into anything difficult. Nothing is pushed. Nothing is rushed.
Our team carries that same approach into every session. We are not here to run you through a protocol. We are here to make sure you feel held and grounded before the deeper work begins.
Between us we offer in-person sessions in Grimsby and virtual sessions across Ontario. When you reach out, we will match you with the person who is best suited to what you are carrying.
WHAT MAY SHIFT
What Others Have Experienced
Most people arrive at the first session expecting to be pushed into the hard material quickly. What they find instead is that the early sessions are about building something solid enough to support you at your pace. When processing does begin, the shift for many clients is quieter than they expected. Not a sudden release. More like a loosening.
How the Sessions Unfold
What to Expect When We Work Together
Here is how the work actually unfolds. The first sessions are not about trauma. They are about your body. We look at what is happening physically when something activates you, why it responds the way it does, and what helps you come back to steady. You leave those sessions with something useful, regardless of what comes next.
When we move into processing, Flash technique means you do not need to hold the memory in direct focus. Bilateral stimulation does the work while you stay as grounded as possible. We check in throughout. Nothing moves forward without your agreement.
Sessions are 50 minutes. We work in person in Grimsby and virtually across Ontario. The space is close to the Niagara Escarpment, near water and walking trails, and that is not accidental. The environment is part of how we work.

We move into reprocessing only when you feel resourced and grounded. Nothing is on a predetermined schedule.
When EMDR Processing Starts Working
What We Hear From People Along the Way
- Most people arrive thinking EMDR will be the hardest thing they have done in therapy. The early sessions tend to feel like the most supported they have ever been.
- Understanding the pattern has almost never been enough to stop it. EMDR reaches the place where understanding runs out.
- The shift often shows up outside the session room first, in a moment where the old reaction simply did not come.
- People who feared being overwhelmed often find the pacing felt entirely in their control.
- Some clients notice that as one memory settles, others connected to it begin to feel lighter without being directly worked on.
- Many people realise partway through that they had been spending a significant amount of energy managing something that no longer needs managing.
Life When Memories Lose Their Grip
When the Nervous System Stops Running the Show
Most people who reach out to us for EMDR don't want a transformation. They want their actual life back.
To sit through a meeting with that person and not spend the rest of the day recovering from it. To hear that tone of voice and not flinch. To be fully in the room with their kids instead of somewhere three years ago.
The shift isn't dramatic. It's specific. The memory is still there. It's filed differently. It reaches into today less and less until one day you realise it mostly stopped.
What becomes possible is the ability to authentically interact with the people, places and things around you. Not managed. Not braced. Actually there.

Common Questions
Questions we Hear Before the First EMDR Session
Is EMDR painful or overwhelming?
It doesn't have to be. I use Flash technique alongside traditional EMDR, which is designed for people who find direct reprocessing too activating. We start slowly, build safety first, and you're in control of the pace throughout.
Do I have to talk about everything that happened?
No. EMDR doesn't require you to narrate your trauma in detail. We work with the nervous system's response to the memory, not a verbal account of it.
How many sessions does EMDR take?
It varies. Some people notice significant shifts in a small number of sessions. Others benefit from longer-term work. We'll give you an honest picture once I understand what you're bringing.
Do you offer virtual EMDR sessions?
Yes. We offer EMDR virtually throughout Ontario. Virtual sessions work well for most clients and allow you to work from a space where you already feel settled.
What's the difference between EMDR and Flash technique?
Traditional EMDR involves holding a distressing memory in mind while engaging in bilateral stimulation. Flash technique achieves similar reprocessing with much less direct contact with the painful material. It's a gentler entry point for people who are worried about being overwhelmed.
